Cylinder Head Bolts - Torque

Beitrag von Profpinz »

G'Day All,
I'm planning on reassembling the engine over the Christmas break, but was curious about the head bolt torques.

The SDP Pinzgauer factory manual says to tighten it in increments of;
Stage One: 40Nm
Stage Two: 60Nm
Stage Three: +1/2 turn (180 degrees)

.........however I was doing a bit of research the other night and was reading the Volvo manual for the D24TIC (late model Volvo's) and it say’s;
Stage One: 40Nm
Stage Two: 60Nm
Stage Three: 75Nm
Stage Four: +1/2 turn (180 degrees)

I know there were a few changes/updates for various things in this motor and I wondered if this was an earlier or later specification than the above Pinzgauer details?

BTW, I'm planning on following the SDP Pinzgauer specifications, unless I hear for certain that the Volvo details are the "latest upgrade" specifications for this motor.

Hi Peter!

Volvo has an iron head, Pinzgauer has a aluminium head, this will be the difference. The Volvo has a gasket and the head for 6 zylinder is one block, maybe this needs more pressure. The main reason (I think) is aluminium, to much pressure will make the material sintering.

I think it`s okay, to follow te Pinzgauer-Handbook, I would do so.

Best reguards from Graz!

Hi Peter

Correct way is

Stage 1 40nm
Stage 2 60nm
Syage 3 75nm
Stage 4 180 degrees

Stage 5 When engine is hot above 50 tighten further 90 degrees
Stage 6 After 1000km driving tighten another 90 degrees

All depends on what head gasket you

Bet you have already done it

Steve
