Whilst I'm not nearly as far advanced as Richard's restoration, last weekend I did start assembling the rear differential and drivetrain.

For the past 12 months or so I have been mainly disassembling, cleaning, stripping, blasting, plating, coating and test fitting parts but last weekend was a bit of a milestone as this was one of the first parts to be fully assembled, so I thought a few pics might be in order :D

Holy smokes. You're member of the "paintjob inside the gearbox in original color" club!

God on ya, that just looks so great.

Hi Peter, looks very nice.
It reminds me on some pice of modern art.

Do you have some pics of the vehicle befor you starteted your restoration
or any back ground information?

regards Xaver

OK mate, here's the story to date in six pics (I have about 1000 pics of the rebuild to date on my computer :D )

The ex Malaysian Pinny as I brought it....Generally Malaysian Pinzgauers need A LOT of work to get them back into running condition

These teeth are typical of the condition of the transfer box.

Even the roller bearings had been "repaired" at some stage in it's previous life.

Hallo Peter

sory for the late response.
I really like the looks of the Malaysian Pinis, especially their camouflage I think it suits them very well.
But it's a shame what condition they are in.

Do you know how many Pinzgauers the Malaysian Army has or had?

Your pics are welcome, please post more of them
and please explain exactly what you did and how you did it to get it so perfekt

I think everyone likes to read your account.

regards to Oz

G'Day Xaver
I understand Malaysia had 164, 718's.

It's been a while since I posted a few pics of the 718 rebuild so here are some covering the work to date.
I've been mainly working on the body of late because I figure it will be at the panel beaters/spray painter for a while, so I can continue working on the chassis, motor etc while it's there, but also my panel beater/painter is threatening to sell-up/retire in the near future so I want to get it to him and completed before he does so.
Most of the panels are made, although at the moment nearly all are temporarily held in place with Clecos, Wedgelocks and Peanuts....I hope to have a big "Spot Welding" weekend in a month or so :D

Peter,

nice to hear from you and wow... amazing pictures! Thanks god you are such a perfectionist and such a skilled engineer. Who else could transform a 718 M into a K model and still make it look like an original? :D

Kind regards,
Constantin

It would take some time, but SDP-Crack could do it also!!! :-)

Const:
G'Day Mate, Thanks for the kind words...... it's not such a huge chore when work combines all of my passions (Pinzgauers, workshops, tools & machines, metalwork etc) :D
Hopefully, next time you and Luise are in Australia the 718 will be finished and I can take you both out for a trip in it.
We've both come a long way in regards to vehicles since those early days so many years ago when we used to keep in touch :D :)

Lorenz:
SDP-Crack has been a huge help with pictures and information on many of the parts and internal structure of the 718/TD components, that I have to build/fabricate.
As there are no 718K's in Australia (and only one other TD) the ability to view, peruse and measure parts is non-existent, so W's willingness to share his extensive knowledge of the vehicles is much appreciated.
(BTW, I also appreciate the kindness of other members on this forum with regards to supplying pics and information required during my 718 rebuild)
SDP-Crack has also been great in regards to some TD parts I have required......he's a real asset to the Pinzgauer community.

We did have a 718 in Australia some years ago, that was imported by Thales/BAE for Australian Military Trials, but as it didn't meet Australian Design Rules for new vehicles it had to be exported after the trials ended.......As most people know the Pinzgauer was not purchased by the Australian Military but rather 4 & 6WD G Wagens were brought.
Fortunately I did get to see and photograph the vehicle whilst it was in Australia.....It was sold and exported to Scotland some years ago.

New Zealand seems to have other rules for new cars.
The S-Tec service crew is very happy with the G Wagons in Australia. A lot of hours of work after selling them :-)

New Zealand seems to have other rules for new cars.
Lorenz, I think the rules are similar to ours, but to import any post 1989 car in Aus, it must conform to current Australian Design Rules (ADR's).
Testing of a vehicle can only be done at/by a RAW's approved workshop and can cost between $30-50,000Aus, so I'm guessing Thales opted to import the Pinzgauer on a special permit/bond....this meant the vehicle had to be exported out of the country after the trials/testing.
The result of the above was that someone in Scotland got a great vehicle.

I understand the G Wagen has been well received by our Military, but I'm yet to see a 6X6 G in the flesh so to speak........I hope to have a good look at one in the not too distant future.
